Hi Gene21,

  1. Everytime I try to convert my script to PDF FINAL Draft it says the printer name is invalid. How do I get around this? A serious Final Draft problem.
  2. The “Save as PDF” function in Final Draft is not working. Everything was fine until about a month or so ago – then it mysteriously stopped working. Every time I try and save as PDF I get the message “Printer Name Invalid.”.
  3. Final Draft 7.1x: File > Save as PDF: Final Draft 7.0x and Final Draft 6: File > Save As, change Format or Save as Type dropdown menu to Adobe Acrobat Document (PDF). For more information on exporting PDF files from earlier versions of Final Draft 7.

·Do you have a 32 bit or a 64 bit edition on Windows installed?

·Are you able to print from other programs fine?

I found the following information from Final Draft for Version 7.

Method 1: You may want to check with the manufacturer if this is the same case with Version 8.

Method 2: If it is not 64 bit Windows, then check this troubleshooting guide from Final Draft if it helps.

You may contact Final Draft for more information.

Typical responses from both sources.
The problem is never with the application, but always with Windows.
And Microsoft 'Support Engineers' rarely look at the solutions they find in a Bing search to see if their 'one size fits all' approach is even applicable to the question they are 'answering.'
Although the operation of the Windows RPC system is far too mysterious for me to solve your problem, let me give you a few suggestions.
  1. Take a look at the Event Viewer (Start > Run > eventvwr > OK). Look at both the Application and System logs for recent errors or warnings. Double-click on an entry to see the details in the 'Event Properties' window. If an entry appears to be related to RPC (or to Final Draft) there should be an error number, which may provide some assistance in tracking down the problem. You can click the 'Copy' icon (just below the up/down arrows) to copy the contents of the Event Properties window and then paste it back here.
  2. Has your system always behaved this way? If not, what changed just before the problem started?
  3. Assuming that things used to work, I wouldn't be surprised if uninstalling Final Draft and then reinstalling it made things work again. Of course, be sure that you have the necessary installation media and product keys before uninstalling. And it goes without saying to back up your documents.
  4. I'm not familiar with Final Draft, but I know it's a screenwriting program. I assume that it has a built-in facility to 'Save as pdf' as an alternate to printing out your document. An quick and easy work-around is to download (free) CutePDF Writer. Then just 'Print' your document as if you were going to use your regular printer but select 'CutePDF Writer' from the drop-down list of printers. A 'Save as' box will open so that you can give a name and location for the pdf file that will be created.
  5. Finally, if the RPC Server really was not started (as suggested by the MS Support Engineer), you would have had far many more problems than not being able to save as a pdf from Final Draft. A list of all of the Windows services that require a functioning RPC server follows. I'm sure that you don't use all of those services, but I'm equally sure that you use some of them and would have noticed if they were broken (e.g., you wouldn't have been able to print at all on any printer).
