PROBLEM SOLVED!

Aug 12, 2018  Windows 8 Driver for Canon MP160 Printer. The latest driver from the canon site appears to be for Windows 7. However, it might install and work properly with Windows 8. If you want to try it, download and install according to the instructions.

I downloaded the Win 7 version of both the driver and Navigator from Canon support and running it in Win 7 compatibility mode works just fine. Also the scanner now works when using apps like Openoffice and Paint to insert directly.

They went on to tell me to call sales and tell them I had been offered 'Loyalty Program' pricing from support. Needless to say, I have not bothered with this. They did give me an actual phone number for tech support, but I haven't had time to use it. I was reading the manual and found that a program called Navigator was supposed to be used to scan documents into my computer. I had never used it but checked my old computer to see how it worked. I found it on the start menu with a search, but only got a 'The specified path does not exist' message.

I was looking at new all in one printers and looked at Brothers support site to be sure Windows 8.1 was supported and was really impressed. It was easy to use and even had a support phone number unhidden without a dozen hoops to jump through to get to it. I am leaning that way now.

I am mostly looking at the problem with the MP150 as a puzzle, not that I wouldn't prefer to make it work, just that buying a new one is so much more cost efficient if I count my time as a cost. Now I am still investigating if I can get a Navigator program installed and working on the new computer. I seldom use the printer or scanner but have it/them because when I need to I can. I will continue to try and figure this out, at least until I need to scan something bad enough to make me buy a new unit. After that it may lose my interest.

SOLUTION AND NEW QUESTION:

The drivers for the Canon MP150 must be installed with it disconnected from the computer.

I still cannot scan because the scanner is not compatible with a USB 3.0 port.

Unfortunately, I only have USB3.0 ports. So my new question: Is there a fix for this?

Process;

I undid all the things below that I had tried and then installed the driver downloaded from Canon for Vista 64 bit with the printer off and the USB cable disconnected. Then I connected the USB from the printer and turned it on. Drivers installed for both the printer and scanner and there was no 'Problem' symbol in the device manager.

I still could not scan, but at least the MP150 was showing as a choice for scanning, which it hadn't before. Using the device manager I went to printers/properties/Settings/Devices and Printers Folder, right clicked on 'Canon MP150 Series Printer' and clicked on Troubleshoot.

Results were: Some USB 2.0 devices are incompatible with USB 3.0. Plugging them into a USB 2.0 port can fix the problem.

ORIGINAL QUESTION:

Windows offers no updated driver. Canon only offers one for MP140 which I tried, but it didn't install. Printing function works except I lack some options like choosing two sided printing or not, and did so from the time I plugged it into a USB port on the new computer with 8.1.Canon states that there is no new driver for the MP150 they did have a troubleshooting software, and I downloaded and ran the 'Diagnose and Repair' within it. It said driver was installed correctly. The device manager still says there is no driver.

Device manager show 'problem', that being no driver installed. This after I downloaded mp140swin64.exe from Canon's website and ran it. I don't know if it said this before because I hadn't checked it before.

I still have the old computer running Vista Version 6.0 (Build 6002: Service Pack 2).

The way I use the scanner is to open a text document (either using Windows Office 2003 or Open Office 3.1)and Insert/picture/scan/request. A window opens on the Vista computer, and I can preview, adust and scan. On the new one nothing happens. I can also use Insert/picture/scan/select source and with Vista I get a window listing the MP150, all my card readers, and cameras. With the Windows 8.1 computer I get the window but nothing is in it, no MP150 and no card readers or cameras.

I went to the device manager on the Vista computer and found all the files listed as 'used as drivers'. I copied all of them to a USB drive and then copied all of them from the USB on to the 8.1 computer in the same folder/subfolders as on the Vista computer. This had no effect.

I had a chat with a Windows support rep and after not buying any of the service plans was told it sounded like a program conflict with which I don't agree. And was referred to an article which turned out to be here but was only about printing problems.

I want to use my MP150 more because of the principle than avoiding the expense of a new printer/scanner. When I got the Vista computer in 2007 to update from a computer using Windows MEI lost the use of my HP120 Deskjet which was a much better printer. I feel like Microsoft, and Canon would rather sell more Service Plans and new Printers respectfully, than bother to write updated drivers. I am going to go shopping online for a new printer copier now. I will wait as long as I can to buy, hoping an answer from here will resolve my scanning problem.

Tried something else. Downloaded Canon's driver for Vista 64bit. It installed, or at least the device manager shows no problem with the new driver called 'null'?? But still no scanning function. Tried to add a scanner, but only choice was to let Windows scan for hardware devices. Of course it found nothing, and I had to click on 'not finding what you want' or a similar term. Then it sent me to help, ONLY for a bluetoothdevice. I am so sick of help being worthless because it always acts as if it can read my mind and leads me to something with nothing to do with my question or problem! Is there anything out there for people who don't have a systems administrator (a real one, not one named as such on a computer like me) at their beck and call, or limitless money to throw at what I feel are (or should be) simple problems?
